Creating the conditions for fruitful learning is an art. Unlike other art forms, though, it can be learned fairly quickly. One key to moving from traditional trainer to expert facilitator of learning is to reposition traditional training as an Orderly Conversation.

During the session, the theory behind the Orderly Conversation will be explored as well as insights and skills for actively engaging learners in the process. These concepts can also be used to design for and coach SMEs to be more effective when they are asked to conduct training.

Attendees will learn:

  • How to initiate and manage an Orderly Conversation in the training room
  •  How to use discussion to meet learning objectives
  • How facilitators can capitalize on their strengths and address weaknesses
  • Techniques for creating slides that serve both trainer and learner
  • Strategies for coaching others (including SMEs) to be more effective in the classroom

The session will be led by Dale Ludwig and Greg Owen-Boger, co-authors of The Orderly Conversation: Business Presentations Redefined and their new book, Working with SMEs: Designing for and Coaching SMEs to Facilitate Learning, to be published by ATD Press this fall.
