Join the ATD Bay Colonies Chapter for Giving Back with DownCity Design! You’ve learned a lot from the chapter’s programs this year and now we’d like to get together and give back to our community. DownCity Design is working on two outdoor education projects, designed and built by our teen designers and for their client’s sites, Leviton Elementary and Spaziano Elementary in Providence.

Project activities 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Chapter gathering 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Volunteers would engage in activities to include:

  • Filling planter beds
  • Painting stencils on the ground
  • Installing signs
  • Sealing concrete
  • Sanding and staining wooden benches
  • Spray painting games on the asphalt and yard (hopscotch, basketball, etc.)

Leviton Dual Language Elementary School

The DownCity Designers team is a crew of high school students from various schools in Providence that meet after school two days a week. This year, they have collaborated with Leviton Dual Language Elementary School to design and build a structure to transform the school’s play yard. During the fall, the students met with the school to discuss the needs of the space. In discovering that the space needed shade, storage, seating, flowers and room to play, the students set off to design a structure that would accommodate all of the above. This spring the students have been hard at work in construction, making the project come to life.

Spaziano Elementary School

The DCD Met High School crew has been working with Spaziano Elementary School this year. The group meets during the school day for 10 hours a week as part of their internship program. The students have finished their design work, creating a maze-like outdoor classroom and gathering space for Spaziano Elementary School that consists of garden beds, seating areas and a shed for water catchment. Students are halfway through their build after cutting and assembling most of the wooden structures and are just getting started with their install. Each day, the crew will be packing up and heading out on site as the space is transformed through the work of the Met school youth designers!

With only a month left of the session, both groups would love some additional hands to help finish the transformation! The extra support will mostly consist of finish work that the students did not have time to complete such as sanding, sealing, painting, and cleaning. All important elements of the project that will make the space feel extra special and sustain the project long term!

Additional logistical details and waivers will be provided prior to the event.
