Leadership and Beer - A Love Story

Even if you’re not a native RI’er, you’re probably familiar with the slogan “Hi Neighbor!”.  Bringing Narragansett Beer back home to RI was no small task, and took the vision, determination and team dynamics of many to accomplish this for Narragansett Brewery, as well as the other craft beer artisans that share space at The Guild RI. Come hear the leadership lessons learned through Narragansett Beers’ revitalization story and partnership with and development of The Guild. Take a tour of the brewery and see how they designed and led an environment that now serves a collection of craftsmen and artisans who come together to explore their passion.

Key Takeaways Include:

  • Taking a calculated risk. Learn and move forward
  • Building a strong group of strategic partners around you
  • Leaving the start-up phase and building a company - it starts with people. Building a strong group of team members around you

Will there be Beer – Lots!  Will there be Food – Yes!  Will there be You? – Only if you register!  Come join in on the fun!

Event Leaders

Mark Hellendrung, CEO

Narragansett is led by Mark Hellendrung, a life-long Rhode Islander and beverage industry insider with more than 15 years’ experience spearheading the growth strategies for several leading beverage companies. Naturally drawn to things possessing genuine heritage and tradition, Mark sought out ‘Gansett, recognizing the potential for reenergizing the iconic New England brand and reestablishing its reputation as the region’s favorite beer. Hellendrung and a group of New England investors purchased Narragansett in 2005.

Prior to Narragansett, Mark served as President of Nantucket Nectars beginning in 1994. Over eight years, Mark established operating and sales platforms that enabled the business to expand by more than $60M. In this role, he managed hundreds of distributors, five contract bottling facilities, and over 100 employees. Together with the ubiquitous founders, Tom and Tom, Mark negotiated an $80M sale of the company to Ocean Spray Cranberries. While at Ocean Spray, Mark continued to grow the brand and, in 2001, assisted in negotiations during the sale of the brand to Cadbury Schweppes/Snapple.

Following Nantucket Nectars, Mark served from 2003 to 2004 as interim-President of Magic Hat Brewing Co., then a 50,000 barrel craft brewer in Burlington, VT. Under his leadership, Magic Hat significantly increased their operating margins and experienced more than 25% business expansion within the year.

Mark originally began his career with KPMG. He received a B.A. in Business Economics from Brown University and an M.S. in Accountancy from Bentley College. He currently serves on the boards of Blount Seafood, The Steel Yard, and the Aquidneck Island Land Trust.
